The proposal in English too. Then the buyer at that British client calls to ask why the price is going up next year, and the account manager who negotiates effortlessly in Dutch suddenly gives an answer two levels simpler than he actually is. He says what he can say, not what he wants to say. What the client mostly hears is hesitation.

For an account manager, that is not a language problem but a commercial one. Yet many vacancies and role profiles still ask for “a good command of English”. That tells you very little: not when recruiting, not when assessing and not when choosing a training. In this article we translate the account manager role into concrete language situations, and those situations into a CEFR level.

Why is “good English” not a useful job requirement?

Because everyone means something different by it. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) of the Council of Europe makes it measurable, with six levels from A1 to C2. Each level describes what someone can do with the language, separately for speaking, listening, reading and writing. What those levels mean in everyday work is explained in our guide language levels from A1 to C2: which level does your team really need?

For account managers, that distinction per skill matters even more. Their English is judged mainly in the moments when there is no time to think: on the phone, at the table, during questions. Someone can read and write English very well and still get stuck as soon as the conversation takes an unexpected turn.

In which situations does an account manager use English?

It helps to break the role down into the language situations that come back regularly. For most account managers with international clients, there are six:

Email, proposals and reports: written, with time to check and tools at hand.

The client call by phone or Teams: the question you did not see coming, with no time to think.

The regular client review: explaining results, naming opportunities, agreeing next steps.

The price and contract conversation: defending a position, making concessions without giving too much away.

The complaint or escalation: here, tone decides whether the relationship survives.

Relationship building: the lunch, the trade fair, the chat before the meeting starts.

The first situation is the easiest, and it is often exactly where the level gets judged. “His emails are fine” says little about how someone holds up in a price negotiation.

Which CEFR level fits those situations?

The CEFR descriptions make the link fairly concrete. At B1, someone manages in familiar situations but loses control as soon as the conversation becomes complex or unpredictable. At B2, someone holds a fluent, spontaneous conversation with native speakers and can support a position with arguments. At C1, someone uses the language flexibly and effectively at work, also understands what is not said literally and adapts their tone to the situation.

Put that next to the six situations and this picture emerges:

Account manager with regular international client contact: B2 is the minimum, especially for speaking and listening. Below that, every unexpected call becomes a risk.

Key account manager negotiating price and contracts in English: C1 for speaking is a realistic goal. At this level it is all about nuance: delivering a “no” without damaging the relationship, or hearing that “we’ll consider it” actually means “no”.

Inside sales or account manager with mainly written contact: B2 for writing, with less emphasis on speaking under pressure.

Two notes. First: what counts is the most demanding situation someone faces regularly, not the average. Second: an account manager rarely needs C2. The step from C1 to C2 takes a lot of time and makes hardly any noticeable difference in a client conversation.

Where do your account managers stand today?

The Business English Team Scan shows in a few minutes how your team performs in client contact, negotiating and conversations under pressure. Free, in Dutch and English.

Take the Team Scan

What does that look like in one team?

Imagine a sales team with four account managers. Two of them mainly serve Dutch clients and occasionally send an email in English. One manages a handful of clients in Germany and Belgium, with calls held in English. The fourth is responsible for the largest British client and sits at the table twice a year for the contract renewal.

One English course for the whole team ignores this difference. The first two probably have enough with B1 to B2 for writing. The third needs B2 for speaking and listening. The fourth benefits most from training focused on negotiating, at C1 level, using his own client conversations as practice material. That is not only more effective, it also keeps you from spending budget on a level the role does not require.

How do you determine the right level for your account managers?

Start with the role, not the course. Three steps help:

Determine the most demanding language situation per role that comes up regularly. Ask the account managers themselves and their manager: where does the English feel tightest right now?

Measure per skill, with a speaking component. A written test alone gives too rosy a picture for this role. At Language Partners every programme starts with an intake including a writing and speaking test, so it is clear per person where they stand.

Train on real conversations. A trainer who re-enacts the price negotiation with the critical buyer does more than a chapter from a textbook. Where exactly meetings and presentations get stuck is described in meetings and presentations in English: where Dutch teams get stuck.

Our Business English training is built this way: in-company or online, in a small group of up to eight or one-to-one, around the situations from people’s own work.

Are you an account manager yourself?

Do you recognise yourself in the phone call from the first paragraph? Then there is a good chance your employer is willing to pay for language training, especially if English is required for your role. How to raise it with your manager, with a sample email you can adapt, is explained in how to request language training from your employer.

Training for your account managers at their own level?

Tell us which client conversations your team handles, and we will propose a programme that fits.

Get in touch

Frequently asked questions about English for account managers

What level of English does an account manager need?

For an account manager with regular international client contact, B2 is the minimum, especially for speaking and listening. At that level you hold a fluent conversation with native speakers and can support a position with arguments. Anyone negotiating price and contracts in English often benefits from C1 for speaking.

Is B2 enough for a key account manager?

For a key account manager who negotiates with international clients, B2 is often just too tight. The difference lies in nuance: reading between the lines, adapting tone and delivering a difficult message without harming the relationship. That belongs to C1. For written contact, B2 is usually sufficient.

How do you test an account manager’s level of English?

Measure per skill and always include a speaking component, because speaking under pressure is the skill that counts most for account managers and is least visible in emails. An intake with a writing and speaking test, or a scan based on work situations, gives a more reliable picture than a written test alone.

The emails are fine.
