Next to making a good first impression with your CV<\/a> it is integral that you include a letter of motivation with your application, also known as a cover letter. A motivation letter is usually written in response to a vacancy but you could also submit an open motivation letter to a company you wish to work for. An open letter might express what you could do for the company whereas a letter in response to a vacancy emphasizes how your skills and experience would suit a particular job opening.<\/p>\n

Who should you address your motivation letter to?<\/h2>\n

Your motivation letter should be addressed to the hiring manager or recruiter. Ensure you have the contact details of the right individual to further personalize the letter. Avoid using impersonal phrases such as \u2018Dear Sir \/ Madam\u2019 or \u2018To whom it may concern\u2019 as it demonstrates a lack of effort.<\/p>\n

How should you structure your letter?<\/h2>\n

Motivation letters are generally written using a formal tone (unless otherwise indicated) and, much like a CV, are made to fit one page. Your first paragraph should explicitly state which position you are interested in and why you want this type of work.<\/p>\n

E.g. I read your advertisement for an experienced Risk Analyst posted on 13 May 2020 with great interest. My professional qualifications appear to be well suited to your company\u2019s requirements. I am particularly interested in this position as it enables me to grow within my current role.<\/em><\/p>\n

In the following paragraphs, indicate that you understand what the role entails and have some knowledge about the company. You should aim to convey why you would be suitable for the position by referring to your relevant experience, qualities and skills. Use powerful, proactive words such as \u2018mentored\u2019, \u2018managed\u2019 or \u2018negotiated\u2019 to indicate that you have the ability and initiative to make things happen. This will stimulate the reader to get to know you better.<\/p>\n

E.g. In my former position as Senior Analyst, I was responsible for mentoring and overseeing the work of two junior analysts. Their onboarding and continued success validates my managerial abilities, which I hope to put to excellent use at your firm.<\/em><\/p>\n

How should you close your motivation letter?<\/h2>\n

It is vital that you close your letter with a positive call to action for the employer to give them an incentive to contact you for an interview.<\/p>\n

E.g. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss further details of the position and my application with you personally. Please find my CV attached. Thank you for your time and consideration.<\/em><\/p>\n

Remember: a motivation letter should be clear, concise and professional. Be sure to check your letter carefully for any typos and spelling errors before sending it off.<\/p>\n
